This afternoon we had our first appointment with our midwife group. I’ve opted for a birth center. Walking through the clinic doors it instantly felt homey. The nurse/ tech that brought me back did not identify herself. B arrived moments later.
Within five minutes the midwife we were meeting with came in. She introduced herself and welcomed us to the center. It was a laid back visit as she was verifying my health history and familial history.
I am not considered high risk in the moment though due to PCOS I am higher risk for gestational diabetes, hypertension and preterm labor. What fun! Currently i will have follow up every four weeks until 32 weeks unless circumstances change. Of course I’ve been guided to work out 4-5x per week for at least 30 minutes.
It was nice to have a visit where I wasn’t poked or prodded. Of course I was hoping to see/ hear lovebug but was told that won’t be likely until our 20 week anatomy scan. Our midwife today did note I could go to the ultrasound boutiques if I just wanted extra imaging. She confirmed that the viability and dating scan looked great even though I didn’t feel great about not seeing lovebug. My due date has remained the same and the midwife said I am still right on track.
We reviewed if there would be any benefit to NIPT testing as we already did genetic carrier screening for myself and B along with PGT-A testing our embryos. B encouraged me to do the testing and I realized it would be nice to have another form of confirmation that genetically/ chromosomal development is okay.
Overall, it was pleasant first experience. I enjoyed that B spoke up and asked questions too. I think we both felt comfortable which is important to me. We have booked our next appointment for four weeks from now.
I did go ahead and book a session at a local ultrasound boutique to hopefully get some better images to use for our announcement (yes, these few posts are back dated as I enjoy writing in the moment). I’m looking forward to hearing the heartbeat and being closer to letting our loved ones know we are expecting!
